We’re treated to a visit to The Temple of Harmony, or rather, a client leaving this establishment — a well-dressed blond woman. Watching her leave is a brunette lady who is begging the blond (Rosemary) not to leave, telling her she is in serious danger. Rosemary is agitated and refuses to listen, hurrying away. She starts walking down the sidewalk and receives a phone call which she ignores. Suddenly a silver sedan behind her starts up and takes off in her direction, jumps the sidewalk and runs her down, killing her instantly. The sedan backs away and is gone.
Teresa, Kimball, Wayne & Patrick meet with local police at the scene. We learn that the victim is the widow of Malcolm Tennant, founder of Calsure Financial and a friend of the Lieutenant Governor. The local police have a couple witnesses and some physical evidence that they will give to the CBI. They also share that Rosemary filed a missing person’s report on her son, Travis a few days ago. Seems the kid has been in trouble before, for some minor things and has disappeared before. The locals state Rosemary’s home is about 8 blocks from where the body was found and surmise she was walking home, but they aren’t sure where she was coming from. Just then, the woman who was asking Rosemary not to leave earlier because she was in danger, walks up and states, “she was with me” and introduces herself as Kristina Frye, Rosemary’s spiritual advisor. Kristina clarifies that she was with Rosemary at her place of business for a spiritual session where they contacted Rosemary’s dead husband. Kristina states that Rosemary’s husband warned her that something bad was going to happen to her. Patrick is clearly septical and asks Kristina for specifics. How did she know about the upcoming murder? Kristina states that she didn’t, she is merely a channel and Rosemary’s husband is the one who knew about the pending murder. Kristina was just passing the message along. Patrick makes his summary of the situation — “so by her own admission she’s either a channel for the energy of departed souls or she’s involved in this murder. So you got a choice. You can call ghostbusters. Or we can take this lady downtown.” Kristina states she is more than willing to help, and Patrick cannot help but laugh. Kristina asks him, “where’s all this anger I feel coming from?” To which Patrick replies, “not from me, maybe you’re projecting.” Kristina tells Patrick he is completely misreading the entire situation but he is extremely skeptical. He clearly thinks Kristina is a fraud and I’m sure this is based on his own history. I also think he’s looking forward to what he thinks will be a little amusement.
Onward to the CBI office for Kristina’s interview. Kristina says she’s been doing this kind of work — psychic readings for Rosemary — for about 3 years now. This is the nature of her professional business, and she has many clients. She charges according to the client’s ability to pay and states she charged Rosemary $500 per hour, and she did 5 to 6 readings per week for her. The team asks how Kristina was helping Rosemary, and she says Rosemary was troubled in many ways by many people since her husband died and needed help with business dealings and with her children, but when Patrick presses her for specifics, she becomes evasive, and he smiles to himself. Kristina says she has to respect client confidentiality. Patrick questions this because the client is dead. What does confidentiality matter now. Kristina maintains that it is necessary but does offer that when she contacts Rosemary, she will ask her permission to share the tapes she made of her sessions with the client before she died. Patrick asks Kristina why she simply doesn’t ask Rosemary who killed her, and Kristina replies that she may not know, death doesn’t simply grant omniscience. Patrick gives her a sarcastic smile — “you’re good.” Kristina replies, “I like to think so.” And Patrick quips, “yes, you do.” And the battle is on.
Kristina asks Patrick how he feels about himself, and he challenges HER to tell HIM. I think this was an error on his part. I think he’s letting his sarcasm and skepticism get the better of him. Let’s see what happens. Here’s Kristina’s evaluation. “I think you act assured and arrogant but inside you are troubled with deep guilt and self-loathing. You’re more than a little unstable.” Patrick blows this off by saying he’s quite a well-known horrible tragedy, that a half hour on the internet would tell anyone that he’s consumed with guilt and self-loathing. But Kristina grins and says that one look in Patrick’s eyes would tell her that and why would he think she would spend any time looking him up on the internet. “A little self-involved, maybe?” Ouch. Teresa gets a grin on her face, like she thinks it’s pretty funny that Kristina maybe took Patrick down a notch or two, but Grace looks like she feels bad for Patrick. I don’t think Grace thinks much of what Kristina said, and I think Grace is quickly becoming Patrick’s friend whether he realizes it or not.
Teresa, Wayne and Patrick go to Rosemary’s home where Jeremy Hale, Rosemary’s current boyfriend, is living. Introductions are made and Jeremy invites them in. Jeremy does portrait photography for a living. The home is a little messy and Jeremy indicates that he may have had some guests the previous evening and had not yet gotten around to cleaning up. When Jeremy is questioned about his relationship with Rosemary’s children, he states he didn’t know her daughter, Clara, well — she wasn’t around much; and the son, Travis was somewhat troubled, did some drugs, didn’t always get along with his father and sometimes would leave home and stay with friends. Patrick asks permission to take a look around the house, as he often does during an investigation, and Jeremy agrees without hesitation. Teresa and Wayne question Jeremy about Rosemary’s will (she put Jeremy in it) and there were some changes to be made involving a trust and Travis, that might raise some eyebrows. Jeremy doesn’t seem to have any clear-cut answers about either of these issues and appears innocent enough.
Patrick calls out from upstairs for Teresa, and they find him in Jeremy’s photography studio. The studio is very nice and Teresa comments that it is nice to have a benefactor. Jeremy states he is blessed. Patrick states, “or clever.” He reviews earlier statements Jeremy made about Travis leaving due to a fight with his father and wonders if maybe he really left because of Jeremy. His reasoning? Patrick thinks Jeremy took over Travis’s bedroom and made it into his studio, pointing out signs that it WAS the boy’s bedroom — poster tape on the walls, stickers on the back of the door, dents above the door from a lacrosse ball maybe and a crack in a pane of glass in the window right at elbow or fist height that might have been made during an argument. Patrick makes the guess that Jeremy kicked Travis out of his room and Travis moved himself upstairs in the house to a smaller room. Jeremy says Travis was happier there but Patrick questions that and Jeremy takes offense at Patrick’s attitude.
Back at the CBI office Grace begins to look into both Jeremy’s and Travis’s history since both are suspects in Rosemary’s murder. Rosemary’s daughter, Clara, turns up at the office (she must have been asked to come in) and immediately asks if anyone has found Travis. Teresa, Patrick and Grace sit down with Clara to interview her. Clara looks like she’s around 23 years old and is well dressed in a black dress and she is well groomed. She is tearful, stating she cannot believe her mother is gone, that she was a good person. -” for her to die in the gutter like that? It’s . . . Like garbage. It’s horrible.” Clara goes on to tell the team that after her father died, Rosemary made bad financial investments and had poor business sense. She sort of states Travis started acting out at that time and that she felt Jeremy was a dangerous man, he had a very bad temper. During the interview Patrick puts his hand over Clara’s, which I think would be perceived by most people as a gesture of comfort; (which I’m sure it was on Patrick’s part, but it also would have been one of his evaluating skills that he so often uses — checking out skin temperature, trying to find a pulse, etc.) but Clara isn’t comfortable with it and pulls away. Clara states she has no clue where her brother is and Patrick hands her his phone and asks her to put Travis’s phone number in it. Clara tells Patrick that Travis won’t call him back, but Patrick asks her for the number anyway.
Patrick walks away from the desk and dials Travis’s number and makes a rather odd statement (surprise surprise). “Hello Travis. You don’t know me, but my name is Patrick Jane. I’m a friend. I know you’re in trouble right now and I want to offer you some peace of mind. I don’t know what peace of mind means to you. It’s different for everyone. For instance, I like riding horses. But would horses make you happy? I don’t know. Why wouldn’t horses make you happy? Go round and round in your mind until you’re sure . . . then go to the place where you know you are happy. Then give me a call. You have my number.” Patrick hangs up and Wayne asks him what that was about. And Patrick says, “quick. What image just came into your head?”
We join Wayne, Patrick and Kimball at, of all places, a carousel. The place is fairly crowded with folks enjoying rides and games. There is a discussion between Kimball and Wayne currently taking place — Wayne saying that you cannot say there are no such thing as psychics just because you’ve never met one and Kimball replies that he’s never seen a zebra but that doesn’t mean THEY don’t exist. Suddenly Kimball notices Travis walking toward the carousel wearing a backpack and points him out to Wayne and Patrick. He says, “Jane, I’ll never doubt you again.” To which Patrick replies, “You ever doubted me?” The incredulous look on Patrick’s face is precious. Travis and the three men get on the carousel and Travis takes note of the CBI fellows and starts to make a run for it. Patrick flashes his signature smile and asks Travis to wait. Honestly, the three of them (Wayne, Kimball & Patrick) did look pretty darned menacing. If I were Travis, I would have made a run for it too.
I suppose through Patrick’s art of persuasion they get Travis to the CBI office and Teresa and Kimball interview him and ask him why he didn’t ask for help instead of just running away from home. Travis says there wasn’t anything his mother or sister could have done to help after his fight with Jeremy and he didn’t want to cause any more trouble so he thought it would be better to just leave. Teresa and Kimball put it to Travis that he had reason and knowledge to become a suspect in his mother’s murder — money. Travis says he really loved his mom, but he just couldn’t tolerate Jeremy. Patrick is seen with Clara outside the interview room, and he tells Clara that he believes Travis. He ushers Clara into the interview room to be with her brother but carefully observes their interaction at being reunited.
Later the team is discussing various possibilities — Travis, Jeremy Hale . . . And guess what. Turns out Rosemary had added none other than Kristina Frye to her will. Patrick quickly guessed that one. Grace defends Kristina by asking why she would implicate herself to which Patrick says, “how diabolically clever.” Amusing.
And dear Grace makes her feelings known by stating, “or maybe she has a rare and precious gift and is trying to help us.” As usual, she and Patrick are going to butt heads as he strikes back. “A rare a precious gift. Tell me, ahem. Who gets these gifts anyhow? How come no one has the gift for seeing horse-race results? And how come dead people always talk such tedious drivel?” Teresa admonishes Patrick to ‘play nice’, that Grace is entitled to her opinion. But Patrick plows on — “Not if it’s wrong. This is like believing in the Easter bunny.” Boy, he’s not going to give it up, is he? Funnily enough, Wayne quips, “Who says there’s no Easter bunny?” A phone rings and the escalating argument is interrupted. Grace takes the call, and it turns out to be from Kristina, who said she might have helpful information. Teresa sends Grace to see Kristina and Patrick invites himself along. He just can’t help himself sometimes, can he? Grace doesn’t want him to come. (wonder why). Teresa tells Patrick to behave himself. (good luck with that).
Patrick and Grace arrive at Kristina’s place of business and are invited in from a distant place inside. They enter a waiting area of sorts and Patrick takes a look around. He’s amused. Grace tells him to behave himself. Patrick does a bit of teaching though. He points out a mirror, explaining that it is a two-way mirror where Kristina is able to observe her clients in the waiting room so she will already have a “feel” for them before she ever meets them face to face. He goes on to check out other areas of the waiting area and Grace admonishes him that he is “trespassing”, like Patrick cares. Kristina arrives and you can see she doesn’t think much of Patrick’s nosing around and he actually looks a little guilty.
Patrick and Kristina butt heads a little bit about the trappings of showmanship that surround the “psychic” game and Patrick confronts Kristina. Seems she HAS done her research on him. Kristina says what she and Patrick have is ‘a calling.’ She wants to know why Patrick gave it up. He tries to blow the question off with silliness, but Kristina tries to cold read him, and Patrick gets pissed.
Grace intervenes and directs them both back to discussing the case. Kristina says she had a vision about the car used in the murder — concrete and water — Grace and she discuss it and conclude it may be in a local reservoir. Patrick keeps himself out of the conversation.
We arrive at the reservoir to find the silver sedan being pulled from the water. Kimball, Teresa, Grace, Patrick, Kristina, personnel for hauling the vehicle and local police are present. The car was registered to Rosemary Tennant, but Travis used it most of the time. Grace suggests that Jeremy Hale might have also used it. The local police want to arrest Travis, but Teresa says no. Patrick tells Teresa that Kristina should be arrested. His reasoning — she knew where the car was. Teresa laughs and tells Patrick; Kristina is a good guesser. She gives Patrick a grin and tells him that maybe that’s what his objection to Kristina is. That she does exactly what he does, but maybe she’s better at it than he is. He’s reluctant to admit that Kristina might be very good at what she does, and he will not admit that she’s better than he is, but he (and I’m amused) says, “and it’s the good ones that are most dangerous.” Photography related supplies found in the trunk of the car throw suspicion back to Jeremy and the team looks back to him.
Patrick, Teresa and Kimball return to the Tennant home to speak with Clara and Travis. They tell the team that Jeremy has gone. The children explain that they argued with Jeremy and that some of their mother’s jewelry is missing. A brief heated exchange between the children and Teresa & Kimball occurs with the kids again denying Travis’s guilt in the murder and aiming blame at Jeremy. Patrick had gone poking about the house again and asks Teresa to come and look at something in Jeremy’s studio. He points out a portrait of a young woman that is damaged by what appears to be the heel of a woman’s shoe. Patrick asks, “why would Rosemary want to put her heel in this nice young woman’s picture that was taken by her womanizing boyfriend, Jeremy?” The kids identify the woman in the picture as Connie Adams, the daughter of an acquaintance of their mother’s and Wayne and Grace are dispatched to Connie Adam’s home.
At Connie’s home they find Jeremy in his undies and Connie wearing a necklace belonging to Rosemary.
Jeremy is brought to the CBI office for an interview. He denies murdering Rosemary and denies driving her car. He is presented with evidence that he has “romanced” multiple wealthy widows in the past and been beneficiary of at least some of their money. But he states, in his defense, all these ladies are alive and still good friends. Teresa asks Jeremy if he knows Kristina Frye and he says he doesn’t think so but when she pushes a little and says both he and Kristina are named in Rosemary Tennant’s will Jeremy says he wants a lawyer.
Wayne learns that Kristina has been named in the wills of multiple clients for some pretty large sums of money and Teresa decides Kristina should be interviewed. Kimball and Patrick go to Kristina’s home to talk with her. Kimball asks her how well she knows Jeremy and Kristina replies that Jeremy took her portrait. Kimball also confronts Kristina about being named in Rosemary’s will and Kristina tells him that she has been named in more than one client’s will, that she does not ask to be, and she discourages it. Kimball asks Kristina why she thinks Jeremy got nervous when CBI mentioned her and him together and Kristina easily replies it was probably because she and Jeremy had sex on several occasions. She isn’t ashamed of the revelation at all, stating they had a good time and that Jeremy is fun. Patrick then asks Kristina if she has spoken with Rosemary yet and she replies that she, in fact, has. She states that Rosemary is quite taken with Patrick. Kristina says that Rosemary says Patrick is a good man, a deeply misguided and damaged man, but good. Patrick asks if Rosemary says who killed her and Kristina says Rosemary doesn’t know but she wants Kristina to continue to try to help. Patrick asks to hear the CD recordings Kristina has made. Patrick and Kristina spar a little bit and Kimball and Patrick make their exit.
Patrick goes to visit Clara and Travis, and he tells them he thinks Kristina is responsible for their mother’s death. He asks them to ask Kristina to conduct a seance to contact their mother at the reading of the will.
Back at the CBI office Patrick begins to put a plan into motion. Wayne and Grace are seen discussing the seance with Patrick observing. Grace says it’s wrong — playing about with raising the dead. Patrick seeks to put her fears to rest by telling her they won’t really be doing that because it’s all just a bunch of bull, but Grace counters with, “you say that but you’re mocking the occult.”
Grace: “You don’t have any belief in the afterlife. You don’t know what you’re getting into.”
Patrick: “Well, I know that seances are tools . . . that con artists like Kristina use to manipulate people.”
Wayne: (very loudly) “Boo!” (Grace jumps, startled)
Grace: “Yeah, laugh. Go ahead. It’s really important to you that Kristina’s a fake? Because if she’s not, if she does have a gift . . . everything you mock, everything you discredit . . . everything you stand for gets turned upside down.”
Patrick: “Um, Ahem. Yeah. True. Unlikely, but true.”
Grace: “What if your family’s looking down at you tonight from the seance . . . trying to talk to you, but they can’t, because you won’t believe?”
Patrick: “Well, that would be very sad.”
You can see the pain in Patrick’s eyes and Grace is immediately sorry for hurting him and apologizes, but it’s awkward and she and Wayne make a quick exit. I still think it is a good thing how Grace stands up for her beliefs and especially how she makes them known to Patrick. She really does care about him.
Back to the Tennant house for the seance and will reading. Present are Travis, Clara, Jeremy, Grace, Teresa, Patrick, the family attorney, Kristina, and several other (I presume) family members. Kristina states that she is going to try to contact Rosemary with everyone’s help. Everyone is directed to hold hands and the lights are lowered. There is a candle lit on a low table at the center of the circle of seated seance attendees.
Kristina calls out for Rosemary and the candle flickers. A woman’s voice is heard calling for Kristina. Kristina replies to the woman (evidently the voice belongs to Rosemary), and she invites the woman to speak or ask anything she might like to. The woman addresses Clara and asks her, “why did you do it?” Clara stands and leaves the room, climbing the stairs and sits on the floor in the hallway near the railing.
Patrick follows Clara and addresses her, stating, “I know what you’re doing and it’s not going to work.” Clara asks him what he means, and he accuses her of cooking up some scheme with Kristina but he’s not buying it.
Flash to Kimball and Wayne in a small travel trailer equipped with electronic recording/listening/speaking equipment and Wayne says, “next cue’s up” and Kimball sets to manipulating dials and buttons.
Inside the house the ethereal woman’s voice is heard again — “Why, Clara? Why?” Clara is clearly distressed and asks who’s doing this. Patrick watches Clara intently. Clara starts to cry and says, “I’m sorry, Mom. I’m so sorry.” Patrick asks her, “Was it you, Clara? Were you in the car? Is that why she’s here? Is that what caused all this?” Clara nods her head and tearfully says, “Yes.”
Incidentally, it kind of surprised me that Kristina agreed to the “fake” seance.
Clara is interviewed later at the CBI office by Teresa and tells her that she just got angry. Clara had argued with Rosemary on the phone because Rosemary was going to change her will to disinherit Travis and they had harsh words. Clara decided to go see Rosemary so they could talk face to face. She didn’t want to meet with her at home because she wanted to avoid Jeremy and Clara knew Rosemary would be seeing Kristina that evening so she drove there and called Rosemary when she saw her leaving Kristina’s, but she wouldn’t even pick up the phone. Clara said she just got so angry . . .
Clara asks how they knew it was her and Patrick explains that he began to suspect when he thought back to their first meeting when she stated how awful it was that her mother died in the gutter. That was information that had never been released and she couldn’t have known unless she had been there. Then when Clara started trying to pin the blame on Jeremy, Patrick just became more suspicious.

Case is closed and Kristina arrives at the CBI office to pick up her CD recordings. As Kristina approaches, Patrick is taking a lie-down on his couch. Kristina asks him if he sleeps there and he replies that he does sometimes — the noise relaxes him, it’s like the sea. Kristina picks up her CDs from the corner of Patrick’s desk but hesitates and looks a little awkward. She tells Patrick she needs to talk to him and Patrick tells her to “fire away.” Kristina tells him what she needs to say requires more privacy than they have in this open area and Patrick gets up and ushers her into an interview room.
Patrick seats himself on the edge of the table and Kristina sits in the chair next to him. Kristina looks a bit anxious, Patrick just amused. Kristina asks Patrick to promise that he won’t interrupt, to hear her out and he says, “okay, I promise.” His voice is light, kind of like he’s probably wondering what fun he’s going to get into.
Kristina: “I talked to your wife.”
Patrick: “Oh, hang on — “
Kristina: (puts a hand up and stammers, reminding Patrick he promised not to interrupt) “Ever since your wife and daughter were killed there’s a question about that night’s events that’s been tormenting you. Yes?”
Patrick: “Yes.”
Kristina: “Your wife wants me to tell you that your daughter never woke up. She didn’t know what happened. She wasn’t scared. Not even for a second.”
Patrick: “You done channeling? That’s it?”
Kristina: “That’s it.”
Patrick: “Thanks.”
Kristina leaves with a quiet goodbye as Patrick begins to sob. We see Grace come by the open door to the interview room where she can see Patrick seated on the table, back to the door, but it is clear by his posture and the trembling of his shoulders that he is crying. She gently closes the door.
Okay. I’ve got lots of opinions on these last couple little events in this story. First the conversation between Kristina and Patrick. I believe Kristina is a good person and that she likes Patrick. I think she meant to offer comfort to him by giving him this tidbit of information about the death of his daughter. But a couple thoughts on this. One — there’s still the question of whether or not she really talks to dead people. Patrick still thinks she’s a fraud so how is he really going to take this revelation? So, how you ask, did she come up with this if she really didn’t talk to Patrick’s wife. Kristina isn’t dumb. She can think things through. Red John wasn’t known for killing kids. I find it very likely that Charlotte was killed outright — probably throat cut viciously and thoroughly in her sleep — dead before she ever knew what happened. Then, Red John moved on to torture Patrick’s wife Red John style. That information was probably available in police reports. So, Kristina could have known that and concocted a little “I talked to your dead wife” story to tell Patrick. As for her “knowing” he had that question in his mind; what man wouldn’t? In either case, I still think she meant to offer a kindness. I wonder though if it was misplaced.
Then on to how Grace handled seeing Patrick’s grief. While I think that Grace is fast becoming a very good friend to Patrick, I think she missed an opportunity here. I know Patrick often shies away from physical contact, but I do not think he would have in this instance. Rather than closing the door on his grief and thus isolating him further I think Grace should have offered an arm around the shoulders or at least a hand on the shoulder. Even if Patrick did not acknowledge her, I still think it would have been welcome.
Leave a what do you think?
