This episode begins with part of the CBI team strolling into a home of an obviously wealthy owner behind the local inspector who makes it clear to them that she doesn’t know why they were even called in — she can handle it. The owner — Jason Sands — is a politically involved big wig and he is missing. Teresa explains that is why CBI has been called in — a request from the AG’s office. The inspector explains Mrs. Sands and daughter got home from an outing the previous evening to find Jason’s study trashed and Jason missing. Patrick, Teresa & Wayne survey the scene. Then Patrick announces, “he’s still here.” The inspector makes a sarcastic remark and Teresa says, “he’s not an agent, he’s a consultant.” I get so tired of this attitude. She’s saying to the inspector — ‘he ain’t nobody.’ The inspector gives Patrick crap about being a psychic and he replies that the missing man is, indeed, here and there’s no such thing as psychics. Patrick says the guy was tortured for a pass code that goes with a remote of some kind that he found on the floor. He determines the remote is to the door of a safe room somewhere and he believes the missing man had a chance somehow to punch in the code and get into his safe room. Patrick starts trying number combinations on the remote without any luck but then notices a picture on the wall with a sailboat and some nautical numbers and decides to give those numbers a try. Much to my amusement, while he’s working the numbers he starts singing a nautical song to himself and gets dirty looks from Teresa and Wayne. Ya just gotta love this guy. He gets the combination and, low and behold, here’s the missing Jason Sands, dead.
Move on to the dead man’s funeral. Patrick asks about the widow and is told she and her daughter were out that evening seeing a play — Peter and the Wolf. He notices a suited man by her side and learns he is the family lawyer. Patrick surmises from the widow’s response to the lawyer that she is either afraid of the lawyer or is being reassured by the lawyer about something she is scared of.
Teresa and Grace decide to leave to check out other avenues in the investigation and leave Patrick, Wayne and Kimball to continue to learn what they can at the funeral. As Grace walks away Wayne comments “Van Pelt, you’re killing me” and Patrick asks him if he has told Grace how he feels. Wayne replies that he sent out vibes but got nothing back. Kimball says, “that’s where he stares at the back of her neck for several hours. Women love that.” Funny, Kimball. Love his dry sense of humor. Patrick tells Wayne he needs to seduce Grace, but Wayne says that’s not really his strong suit and Patrick tells him it’s easy once you know the basic principles. He tells Wayne it will cost him a dollar which Wayne coughs up. Patrick tells Wayne — love and affection. Who doesn’t want love and affection? Wayne is skeptical. Patrick then bets Wayne $100 that he can seduce any woman at the funeral and Wayne chooses — the widow. Patrick takes the challenge, much to Wayne and Kimball’s chagrin and off he goes, straight for Mrs. Sands. I love these interactions between the team members. It makes them so human, and we get to watch the friendships develop with each episode. It makes the story so much more than just solving a crime. We get to know and love the characters. Patrick’s interaction with the widow is pretty much inappropriate (what else would we expect?). He tells her she’s beautiful; the lawyer tries to come to her rescue and Patrick pretty much tells him to get lost and the guy backs off — more evidence of Patrick’s manipulative abilities. He tells the widow that any time she might need help that she can call him and he will come. Now the lawyer kind of recovers himself and makes an aggressive move toward Patrick but Wayne and Kimball intervene to save his ass.
Back at the CBI offices Minelli is not happy. He tells Teresa he is disappointed. Minelli asks Teresa how she could have left Patrick alone at the funeral and she apologizes stating she mistakenly treated him as a responsible adult. Amusing. Patrick states he does have a plan. He says they have to win the widow’s confidence and Virgil makes me laugh when he says, “how is that going for you?” Patrick says the widow is playing hard to get. Virgil replies, “jane, you close cases. You close like a fiend. So, I tolerate you and protect you. And I let you make Lisbon’s life a misery.” He goes on to say that when Patrick crosses that invisible line that causes issues for CBI that he will throw Patrick to the wolves. Minelli gets a phone call and says that Mrs. Sands has demanded an in-person apology from Patrick at her house and we can see that Patrick is thinking his plan is starting to fall into place already.
So, Patrick hops along to the Sands’ home and while awaiting Mrs. Sands’ appearance he is invited by her daughter to see her trolls and he goes with her to her room to see her toys. You can see the joy he takes in being able to interact with a child. Clearly, he loves children.
Mrs. Sands arrives and he goes with her to chat. Mrs. Sands accuses Patrick of being too forthright, that she doesn’t know why she simply doesn’t have him fired. Patrick’s not daunted and asks her why she asked him to her house to talk. She tells him she wants to take him up on his earlier offer to help and goes on to inform Patrick that her husband was broke but she didn’t know. She says she’s frustrated with all Jason’s secrets, and she believes Jason must have left some money or something somewhere. She wants Patrick to help her find it. An interruption from asset seizure guys, and Patrick gets them out of the house with lies and deception.
Back to the CBI offices. Teresa confirms Sands was broke. Kimball says ten million dollars showed up in Sands’ accounts, but no one knows where it came from or where it is now. The question of whether Patrick is sure the widow doesn’t know where the money went arises and he replies that he’s sure she doesn’t. Teresa asks Patrick if he’s ‘soft on the widow.’ His reply. “Maybe a little.” He says, “she’s a gorgeous, grieving widow. Of course, maybe a little.” This tells me a little about Patrick at this point in his new career. He’s lonely. He has an eye for the ladies. He’s still working at removing himself personally from victims. He does reassure Teresa that his feelings won’t interfere with his work — “after all, I’m a law enforcement professional. Jeez”, as he lies down casually on his couch stretching his arms above his head. Kimball gets a grin from this, and Teresa just shakes her head. Even Grace gets a smile.
Teresa goes to have a chat with the family lawyer which she begins by apologizing for Patrick’s behavior. Sigh. The lawyer tells Teresa he learned about the missing ten million after the fact, confronted Jason about it, and was told that Jason was going to use the money to surprise his wife. The lawyer then states he thinks Jason was going to use the money to escape the country because he was facing possible jail time for his business indiscretions.
Grace finds the source for the ten million — a shell company of some kind — and Teresa, Kimball and Patrick go to investigate. Turns out the location they go to turns out to be a “pretty big boat” that’s docked at a marina. Onto the boat they go, and I find it interesting (as the shows go on, this often happens) that Kimball obviously tells Patrick to ‘stay back’, out of immediate danger. I like it how the team takes care of him in this manner. They are acutely aware of his not being armed and that he is not trained to defend himself. Teresa and Kimball enter with Patrick behind and find the boat trashed. A clatter is heard and Teresa and Kimball proceed on into the boat, guns drawn. Patrick tells them he will wait off of the boat and turns to leave and finds himself face to face with a gun wielding woman. I think I would have needed new britches at this time, but I guess Patrick is starting to get accustomed to getting guns pointed at him by now. The gun wielder is confronted by Teresa and Kimball and made to understand that they are the police and she lays her gun down. She tells them that the boat is hers and Jason Sands is her fiance. Interesting. We learn the gun woman’s name is Adrianna.
Back to the CBI offices for Adrianna’s interview by CBI. She’s told she can be charged with various crimes such as burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. She is disdainful, stating she won’t talk. (Grace and Teresa are doing the interview. Exit Grace, enter Patrick. I’m not sure where Adrianna is from (she clearly has an accent not American) and she tells them she was in a detention camp when she was little and considers that serious; her current situation — not so much. Adrianna tells Patrick and Teresa that Jason bought diamonds with the ten million dollars and was making plans to skedaddle with her and his daughter. Adrianna trades the names of two guys that Jason laundered money for for her freedom and no charges against her.
Kimball updates the team about the two crooks that Jason laundered money for. Patrick takes the opportunity for a brief one to one discussion with Adrianna and is told that Jennifer (Mrs. Sands) is pretty much a liar about most things and that she (Adrianna) loves Jason’s daughter a lot more than her own mother does. Patrick leaves to go talk to Jennifer and Kimball, Wayne and Teresa obviously question his motives. Is he still infatuated with this grieving widow?
He meets with Jennifer, and he asks her a question about the story of “Peter and the Wolf.” He gets her answer and moves the conversation to another topic. He tells Jennifer about the ten million dollars which she says she had no knowledge of. She praises Patrick’s skills and asks him to help her find the missing money. Patrick then tells her about Adrianna and Jennifer says she knew nothing about her and seems somewhat distressed but unsurprised, like she expected this in a way. She asks Patrick to hold her, to comfort her, and I start to truly wonder how genuine she is. I’m sure Patrick already has her figured out but this request from her seems totally inappropriate. Patrick politely states he cannot.
Grace and Wayne go to catch the guys Jason was laundering money for. On interview they deny killing Jason or having the missing money. They advise the CBI they ought to be checking out Adrianna more closely.
Patrick gets a call from Jennifer saying her daughter has been kidnapped. Jennifer surmises the kidnappers want the ten million dollars even though she doesn’t have it. She appeals to Patrick, and you can tell she still thinks she’s got him under her spell.
The kidnappers reach out and Patrick says to tell them he will bring the money to them. He also tells the team that he now knows where the money is. He makes a beeline out of the offices.
Next, we see Patrick in video conference with the team and he is warned to be careful and get out if things go south. He’s waiting in a car and next thing you know Adrianna hops in the passenger seat and (yay) points a gun at him. She threatens to kill Patrick if this is a trap and demands the diamonds. She claims she is not with the kidnappers; she is only trying to protect Julie (the Sands’ daughter). Adrianna wants to see the diamonds which Patrick hands over. In a slick exchange Adrianna ends up with a water bottle and Patrick ends up with her cell phone. Patrick forwards the last number dialed to the team. Adrianna claims innocence to the kidnapping scheme — she is a go between. She is to get the money to the kidnappers, and they have promised to release Julie.
The team locates the place where they believe Julie is being held and make their approach. Adrianna is used to get them to open the door, and the armed team breaks on in. Kidnappers are apprehended and Julie is rescued.
Turns out that the ‘kidnapper’ was the Sands’ lawyer, and the team shot and wounded him. Minelli’s not happy. Of course, the lawyer has been grievously wounded and cannot be questioned. Teresa puts it to Minelli that they think the lawyer was in cahoots with either Jennifer or Adrianna (they aren’t sure which) to get at the money. She tells him Patrick has an idea. She asks Minelli if he has the team’s back and he gives a little speech about how he really doesn’t want involved, especially if they do something unorthodox or underhanded. He finishes up his little speech though by telling her of course, he has her back. “I’m insulted you need to ask.” I love Virgil Minelli.
Next scene is at the hospital where Julie was taken to be checked over after her kidnapping. Jennifer and Adrianna end up there at the same time and it becomes quite obvious that the two know each other. Huh. A lie from Jennifer earlier to be sure. A bunch of misinformation is given to Adrianna and Jennifer by Kimball and Grace and the two women are left alone together in a public area in the hospital. After a couple minutes the team finds that both women are missing and begin a frantic search of the hospital. They find Adrianna comforting Julie in her hospital room.
Next, we find Jennifer rushing into her house and frantically searching for something. Patrick is already there and confronts her. Jennifer figures out she’s been played and she’s unhappy. She accuses Patrick of playing her the whole time and he admits, “not the WHOLE time.” She says she thought they had a connection which he admits to and Jennifer wants to rekindle it. Patrick states that’s not possible now. She then blames Bennett (the lawyer) for forcing her into this mess, but Patrick tells her he knows better. He calls her on her lack of knowledge about the play she claimed to have gone to with her daughter the night her husband died and admits if she hadn’t screwed that up, he probably would have gone on believing her sad story and told her where the diamonds were, and the case would never have been solved. Man, he really did get suckered in. Almost whoops. Jennifer gets all pissy and gives Patrick a rant about her husband having a whore and how badly it hurt that her daughter preferred Adrianna over her own mother. Patrick replies kindly to her ranting question, “how do you think that makes me feel?” He seems truly sympathetic when he replies. “I’m sure it hurts.” She admits to torturing her husband that night in an effort to get at his ‘running away’ money. When she asks Patrick where the diamonds are he reveals that they were hidden in Julie’s room the whole time.
In a conversation after Jennifer is arrested Patrick tries to save face by saying he suspected Jennifer right from the start and to reinforce that he says he lost the bet with Wayne about being able to seduce her. Patrick tells Wayne again about seduction — love and affection — and encouraged Wayne to go for it but after everyone else walks away and it’s only Grace with Wayne, Wayne chickens out — again. What a dope.
Leave a what do you think?
